Jezvinec

Pocinovice, Czechia

About this place

Jezvinec is a 739-metre hill in western Bohemia, the highest point of the Všerubská vrchovina (Všeruby Highlands), rising northwest of the town of Nýrsko right above the village of Pocinovice in the Domažlice district. This is Chodsko country — the historic borderland region once guarded by Czech frontier villages, a heritage still visible in Pocinovice itself, at the foot of the hill.

What should you know before heading up?

The summit and part of the slopes are protected as a nature reserve covering just under 9 hectares, established in the mid-1950s. The reserve exists to protect an old mixed slope forest — beech trees over two centuries old grow here alongside fir, spruce, maple, lime and elm. The forest floor hosts protected plants, including wild garlic, whose scent drifts over the paths in spring. Because of the dense tree cover, there's no sweeping panorama from the top — Jezvinec rewards lovers of old-growth forest rather than viewpoint hunters.

How do you get to the top of Jezvinec?

A marked hiking trail climbs to the summit from the village of Orlovice, running southwest through the reserve's forest. A cycling route forming part of the Šumava Magistrála (Šumavská magistrála) also runs along the slopes, popular with cyclists exploring the Czech-Bavarian borderland. The hike pairs easily with a visit to Pocinovice itself, one of eleven Chodian border-guard villages already listed in 1325 in a charter issued by King John of Luxembourg, confirming their status as settlements watching over the southwestern frontier of the Kingdom of Bohemia.

Who is this trip for?

Jezvinec suits visitors looking for a quiet forest walk, nature-watching and a brush with Chodsko regional history, rather than those hoping for a lookout tower or wide views — there's no such infrastructure at the summit. The surrounding villages, Pocinovice included, offer instead the atmosphere of a borderland with strong folk traditions and architecture tied to the old frontier guard.
