About this place
Doubrava is a wooded hill rising to 727 m above sea level, the highest point in the cadastral area of the village of Dolany in the Klatovy district, Plzeň Region. Together with its neighbouring summit, Malá Doubrava (719 m), it forms the so-called Doubrava ridge, a clearly defined line of hills overlooking the Úhlava river valley northwest of the town of Klatovy.
Where is Doubrava located?
The hill belongs to the Švihov Highlands (Švihovská vrchovina), part of the wider Chudenice Highlands on the edge of the Šumava foothills. The Doubrava ridge stretches between the villages of Poleň, Věckovice, Drslavice, Řakom, Slatina and Balkovy, and Doubrava is its highest and most prominent point. Thanks to its dense forest cover and clear summit shape, the hill is a recognisable landmark visible from the surrounding area around Klatovy.
How do you get to the top?
The most convenient starting points are Dolany itself or the nearby villages of Řakom, Poleň and Slatina, from where forest paths climb gradually through mixed woodland. The ascent requires no mountaineering experience — elevation gain is modest, and the routes are quiet forest and dirt tracks popular with locals for walking and cycling. Hikers looking for a longer outing can combine the climb to Doubrava with a walk along the whole ridge toward Malá Doubrava, taking in both summits on a single trip.
What will you see along the way?
The summit and slopes are covered by dense mixed forest, so views from the top itself are limited — this is a destination for a calm walk rather than sweeping panoramas. On the eastern slope of Doubrava lies an archaeological site, the remains of a prehistoric hillfort, evidence that the hill was inhabited and used defensively thousands of years ago. Telecommunication equipment stands on the summit; while not a tourist attraction in itself, it makes the peak easy to spot among the surrounding hills. The wider area, with meadows, forest clearings and glimpses of the Úhlava valley, offers a quiet, typical stretch of Czech upland landscape.
When is the best time to visit?
Spring and autumn are the best seasons, when the forest is airy and temperatures are comfortable for longer walks. In summer the wooded route offers welcome shade, making it a good choice on hot days. In winter, when snow settles, the forest tracks along the Doubrava ridge are sometimes used for gentle cross-country skiing, though the trail is not officially groomed for it.
