Jazevčí

Velká nad Veličkou, Czechia

About this place

Jazevčí is a national nature reserve in the White Carpathians, east of Velká nad Veličkou near the village of Javorník. Protected since 1987, the reserve covers roughly 99.2 hectares, stretching from the left bank of the Velička River toward the Hradisko hill, which rises to 636 metres above sea level in the Velká Javořina range.

What makes up the landscape of Jazevčí?

The reserve is shaped by extensive flower-rich meadows interspersed with small woodlands, clusters of trees and shrubs, and scattered individual trees. These meadows are the heart of the protected area, ranking among the botanically richest sites in the entire White Carpathians. Notable plants include Bombus knapweed, the elder-flowered orchid, and yellow flax, alongside several other endangered orchid species that draw botanists from across Central Europe.

Why are the meadows here so significant?

The White Carpathians are famous for their orchid meadows, home to one of the most extensive and species-rich concentrations of orchids anywhere in Central Europe. Jazevčí, together with the neighbouring Čertoryje reserve, is counted among the region's most valued localities precisely because of this density of rare meadow flora. Traditional, low-intensity management — mowing rather than intensive cultivation — has preserved a level of species diversity that has disappeared from much of Europe under industrial agriculture.

What wildlife lives in the reserve?

The richness of the flowering meadows also supports fauna, and the area is home to a number of endangered animal species that depend on this increasingly rare type of habitat. The mosaic of meadows, groves, and shrubland creates varied microhabitats that provide shelter and food for insects and other small animals tied to meadow ecosystems.

How can visitors explore Jazevčí?

The reserve lies close to the village of Javorník, which serves as the starting point for the Javořinská educational trail running along the edge of the protected area. This route offers a practical way to experience the landscape of Jazevčí without entering its strictly protected core. Velká nad Veličkou itself, the gateway to this part of the White Carpathians, sits in a region known for Moravian folklore and its proximity to larger towns such as Hodonín and Slovakia's Trenčín, making it a convenient base for further exploring the Velká Javořina range.
