Búrová

Suchov, Czechia

About this place

Búrová is a small but botanically remarkable nature reserve located west of the village of Suchov, on the northeastern slope of Háj hill (573 m above sea level) in the White Carpathians, close to the border with Slovakia. The protected area covers 19 hectares and is managed by the Nature Conservation Agency (AOPK), through its White Carpathians Protected Landscape Area administration.

What does the Búrová reserve protect?

The main reason for protection is the occurrence of black false hellebore (Veratrum nigrum) — in Moravia, this plant grows only here, at its sole known site within the White Carpathians. The reserve also aims to preserve characteristic White Carpathian meadow communities, considered among the most valuable natural habitats in the region.

The site was first placed under protection in the summer of 1987 as a state nature reserve, and was later reclassified as a national natural monument (NPP Búrová).

What plants grow on the Búrová meadows?

Búrová is a classic flowering White Carpathian meadow dotted with scattered solitary trees — a landscape typical of land that has traditionally been managed rather than intensively mown. Alongside black false hellebore, the meadow hosts species such as sainfoin clover, golden garlic (also known as moly), and crown vetch.

At the meadow margins, several orchid species can also be found, including the man orchid (Orchis anthropophora) and the heath spotted-orchid (Dactylorhiza maculata). The rich mosaic of flowering plants also supports rare butterfly species, for which the meadows of the White Carpathians remain one of the last strongholds in the region.

Where exactly is the reserve located?

Búrová lies in the Hodonín district of the South Moravian Region, directly adjacent to the village of Suchov. The area stretches along the slope of Háj hill, which rises to 573 meters above sea level — a landscape typical of the gently rolling White Carpathian uplands straddling the Czech-Slovak border.

The whole region forms part of the White Carpathians Protected Landscape Area (Bílé Karpaty), which is also a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, recognized as one of Central Europe's most valuable natural areas for its wealth of meadows, old orchards, and traditional land management practices.

Why is Búrová worth visiting?

The Búrová reserve is a destination for botany enthusiasts and anyone seeking a quiet walk away from crowds. Its small size means a visit doesn't take long, but the meadow's species richness — from rare plants to orchids and butterflies — makes it an appealing stop for nature lovers exploring the White Carpathians. It also serves as a good starting point for further hikes across the surrounding hills and other nearby reserves.
