About this place
Jardim Teófilo Braga, also called Jardim da Parada, is a public garden in Lisbon's Campo de Ourique neighbourhood. It covers roughly 0.39 hectares and offers a quiet green pause amid residential streets, away from the busiest tourist areas of the Portuguese capital.
Where is Jardim Teófilo Braga?
The garden lies in Campo de Ourique, in western Lisbon, at about 38.7179 N, 9.1652 W. Four streets frame it: Rua de Infantaria 16 to the north, Rua Tomás da Anunciação to the west, Rua Almeida e Sousa to the south and Rua de 4 de Infantaria to the east. Two of those names refer to infantry regiments, echoing the military past of the site.
Why two names?
The official name honours Teófilo Braga, a writer, teacher and poet who became the second President of Portugal. The garden was created in the early twentieth century. The popular name, "Jardim da Parada", comes from the fact that the land once served as the parade ground (parada) of a nearby barracks. Many locals still prefer that name.
What can you see here?
The garden is romantic in style: winding paths and a curving pond in the middle create the layout typical of nineteenth-century city gardens. Notable exotic trees grow here, and many are labelled with their species, so a stroll can double as a small botany lesson.
Among its features are a bandstand (coreto) and a statue of Maria da Fonte, a figure linked with Portuguese popular history and resistance. The monument was placed in 1920 and is the work of sculptor Costa Motta (the uncle). There is also a children's playground and public toilets on site.
Has the garden been renovated?
Yes. In the early twenty-first century the park was restructured, which improved its facilities. Today it works as a practical neighbourhood park used by families with children, older residents and people who work nearby.
