About this place
Jardim da Estrela is a public park in Lisbon, Portugal, standing directly opposite the Estrela Basilica in the western part of the city. It is one of the best-known green spaces in the Estrela district and is enjoyed by locals and visitors alike.
How did Jardim da Estrela come to be?
Construction of the garden began in 1842 as a place of leisure for the people of Lisbon. Work stalled between 1844 and 1850 because of funding shortfalls and the Patuleia civil war (1846–47), and it resumed only after the fighting ended. The park opened to the public on 3 April 1852, a decade after work began. It was laid out by the landscape gardeners Jean Bonnard and João Francisco.
What is there to see in Jardim da Estrela?
The park is a 19th-century garden in the romantic style. Its main features include:
- A duck pond at the centre, home to turtles and geese as well as ducks,
- Winding gravel paths that suit an unhurried stroll,
- Exotic trees and cacti, planted for variety rather than to reflect local vegetation,
- A wrought-iron bandstand, a landmark of the park.
Why is there a bandstand in the park?
The bandstand was built in 1884. It originally stood in Lisbon's Public Park (Passeio Público). Part of that area was later turned into Avenida da Liberdade, and in 1936 the bandstand was moved to Jardim da Estrela, where it remains one of the most recognisable features.
When is the best time to visit?
The garden is carefully maintained. At weekends it fills with young Portuguese families, so the mood is livelier than on weekdays. For a quieter visit, choose a weekday morning. The pond with its ducks and turtles is a particular draw for children.
Jardim da Estrela and the Estrela Basilica
The park lies right across from the Estrela Basilica, so the two are easy to combine in a single outing. After visiting the church you can cross the street and rest in the shade of the trees. It makes a convenient break while exploring western Lisbon.
