About this place
Jardim da Praça Dom Luís is a public garden in Lisbon, in the Misericórdia parish, right beside the Mercado da Ribeira hall that houses Time Out Market. Locals also call it Jardim Sá da Bandeira, after the monument standing at its center. The garden was inaugurated in 1884 and remains a quiet patch of green in a busy waterfront neighborhood.
What does the garden look like?
The garden is a rectangle of roughly 4,000 square meters. Its paths are laid out symmetrically around a central point, which is marked by the monument. Six large flowerbeds sit between the paths, and benches line the walkways. Tall plants of several species grow in the beds, including jacarandas. The layout is simple and easy to read, so you can walk the whole garden in a few minutes or settle in the shade for longer.
What is the monument at the center?
The centerpiece is the monument to the Marquis Sá da Bandeira, unveiled on 31 July 1884. It has three parts: a base of three steps, a stone pedestal, and the main statue. The Marquis is shown standing and holding a banner.
Four bronze figures surround the base. One at the rear represents History, two lions flank the monument, and at the front a woman carrying a child represents the enslaved people of Africa. The sculptor was the Italian Giovanni Ciniselli, and the architect was Germano José Sales.
Who designed it?
Giovanni Ciniselli created the sculpture and Germano José Sales handled the architecture. The symmetrical grid of paths makes the monument the axis of the whole composition.
Can you get a drink or a bite here?
A kiosk-style bar, Quiosque do Cais, operates inside the garden, so you can pick up a drink and enjoy it on a bench among the flowerbeds. Time Out Market is next door, which gives you plenty of food options nearby.
Who is it for?
The garden works well as a short break while exploring the waterfront and the Cais do Sodré area. It is often described as an oasis of calm amid the bustle of the lively city. Stop by if you want to rest in the shade, see a nineteenth-century monument, or combine a stroll with a visit to the market.
