Jankovo Brdo

Jankovo Brdo is a peak in the Dinaric Alps sitting directly on the border between Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, just above the Bosnian municipality of Bosansko Grahovo. At 1,777 metres, it is the highest point in Croatia's Split-Dalmatia County and forms part of the wider Troglav mountain group, one of the most rugged and scenic ranges in this part of the Balkans.

How do you get there?

The most convenient starting point on the Bosnian side is Bosansko Grahovo itself, a small town in western Bosnia right on the Croatian border, from where access roads lead toward the Troglav massif. On the Croatian side, hikers usually approach from the Dalmatian hinterland (Dalmatinska Zagora). Because the area sits on a mountainous border stretch, it's worth checking the condition of the approach roads in advance, since the higher sections can be unpaved.

What will you see?

The trail to the summit is rated T2, meaning it requires reasonable fitness and sure footing but no technical climbing gear. A distinctive hexagonal shelter made of red sheet metal stands on top — a twin of the one on the neighbouring Lišanjski Vrh — offering hikers cover if the weather turns suddenly. Thanks to the peak's height and exposed position, it opens up a wide panorama over the entire Dinaric massif in every direction, reaching as far as neighbouring Troglav and the surrounding ranges.

When should you go?

Late spring through summer and into early autumn is the best window, when the trail is dry and free of snow. In winter and early spring, snow and ice linger in the higher sections, and strong wind on the exposed ridge can make the crossing considerably harder — at that time of year, the climb is really only for experienced mountain hikers with proper gear.
