Velika Duvjakuša

Velika Duvjakuša is the highest peak of the Dinara massif on the Croatian side, rising to roughly 1,708–1,709 metres above the town of Vrlika in the Dalmatian hinterland. Unlike many mountain summits, it has no sharp rocky tip — the top is a broad, grassy meadow that slopes gently toward the surrounding ridges.

How do you get to the top?

The most popular — and most demanding — route in the Vrlika area starts from the village of Ježević and climbs all the way to Velika Duvjakuša; hikers consistently rate it very highly (4.7 out of 5). A rough dirt track also runs close to the summit, so part of the approach can be covered by off-road vehicle or bike before the walking section begins in earnest. A useful landmark along the way is the "Puma" mountain hut, sitting at the foot of Rosić glavica at about 1,630 metres — the highest mountain facility in all of Croatia. From the hut it takes only about 10 minutes on foot to reach the summit of Velika Duvjakuša.

What will you see from the summit?

The panorama from the top is one of the widest in Dalmatia. Looking north you can pick out the distinctive silhouette of Veliki Troglav; to the northeast the Cincar and Vran ranges rise on the Bosnian side; and turning south reveals Mosor, Svilaja, and the Dalmatian islands on the horizon. The peak itself sits on a lower ridge running parallel to the main Troglav crest, which is why it stands out clearly when viewed from neighbouring summits on a clear day.

On the flat summit plateau stands a memorial dedicated to thirty-one members of the 7th Guards Brigade "Pume" who died in the wider Dinara area. The monument is built on a stone platform shaped like a lying cross, assembled from 31 stone blocks — one for each fallen soldier. Set against the bare, open expanse of the mountain pasture, the memorial makes a strong impression.

When is the best time to visit?

The area falls within Dinara Nature Park, so the best window for a hike runs from late spring through early autumn, once the snow has cleared from the higher ground and both the trail and the access track are passable. In summer it pays to start early — the open, treeless summit meadow offers no shade, and the midday sun can be intense. A weather station is also installed on the summit, a good reminder of how quickly conditions can change up here: sudden gusts of wind and fast-shifting visibility are the norm at this altitude.
