Jančija glavica

Jančija glavica is a peak in the Dinara massif rising above the village of Kijevo, in Croatia's Dalmatian hinterland southeast of Knin. The summit reaches 1,585 metres above sea level and forms one of the checkpoints on the Dinara Mountaineering Circuit (Planinarska obilaznica Dinara), a loop trail around the entire massif opened in 2024 by the Croatian Mountaineering Association (HPS).

How do you get to Jančija glavica?

Most hikers start from Kijevo, sitting at roughly 540 metres, home to the local Church of St. Michael — one of the recognisable landmarks along the circuit. From there the trail climbs toward the limestone ridges of Dinara, passing Martinove košare mountain hut, less than 1.5 km south of the summit. The full circuit runs about 40 km and connects into a wider network of marked paths that trace the massif on both the Croatian and Bosnian sides of the border. Given the rocky, partly exposed terrain, plan for a full day out, wear sturdy hiking boots, and carry enough water — reliable sources along the way are scarce.

What will you see at the summit?

Jančija glavica rises above a valley known as Tojčića dolc and works as a natural viewpoint over the surrounding ridgelines. From the top, the view stretches toward the mountains of Bosnia and Herzegovina — Dinara sits right on the border between the two countries, with its ridges running seamlessly from one side to the other. On a clear day you can pick out the chain of peaks running Veliki bat – Jančiji vrh – Lišanjski vrh – Troglav, and in the other direction the group formed by Antića glavica, Jančarska glavica and Velika Duvjakuša. At the top, next to a metal information board, sits stamp point KT 9 — one of the checkpoints along the Dinara circuit that hikers collect as they work their way through the route.

When is the best time to visit?

Late spring and early autumn offer the most comfortable temperatures and generally the clearest visibility. In summer, the rocky, largely unshaded slopes heat up fast during the day, so an early start is worth it. In winter, the higher parts of the massif can hold snow and ice, which calls for proper mountaineering experience and gear.
