Jadićevac

Baške Oštarije, Croatia

About this place

Jadićevac is a peak in the Velebit mountain range, rising above the small mountain settlement of Baške Oštarije in Croatia, right on the boundary between Middle and South Velebit. It sits at coordinates 44.5556 N, 15.1994 E, inside Velebit Nature Park — one of the wildest and least crowded mountain areas in the Balkans.

How do you get to Jadićevac?

The most convenient starting point is Baške Oštarije itself, a mountain hamlet at 926 metres above sea level, roughly 20 km from Gospić toward Karlobag and 18 km from Karlobag toward Gospić. From the far end of Stupačinovo, a hamlet that forms part of Baške Oštarije, a gravel track heads out toward Jadićevac, giving hikers a clear route onto the peak. No climbing gear is needed, but as everywhere on Velebit you should carry sturdy trekking boots, a map, and plenty of water — natural sources along the way are scarce.

What will you see on the way?

The landscape around Baške Oštarije is classic Velebit: rocky clearings, low beech woodland, and views that shift with every stretch of the climb. The settlement sits right at the edge of Oštarsko polje, a mountain karst field roughly 4 km long and 1 km wide, one of the signature landforms of the region. Baške Oštarije is also where the Premužić Trail ends — a celebrated 57-km mountain path linking the summit sections of North and Middle Velebit, and one of the most highly regarded trekking routes in Croatia. For anyone heading up to Jadićevac, that makes it easy to combine the climb with a stretch of the trail or build a longer stay around the area.

When should you visit?

Late spring through summer and early autumn is the best window for hiking this part of Velebit, when trails are clear and mountain weather is at its most stable. Velebit is notorious for the bura, a sudden and forceful wind that can make walking exposed ridgelines difficult, so it's worth checking the forecast before setting out. In winter the terrain becomes far less accessible and calls for real mountaineering experience.

Why visit Jadićevac?

Jadićevac and the surrounding Baške Oštarije area suit travellers looking for something beyond Croatia's coast: the raw, untamed nature of Velebit Nature Park, quiet trails, and open space away from the crowds. This is a place where nature still sets the terms, and reaching the summit delivers a sense of achievement that's harder to find on more touristed routes.
