About this place
Igreja de São Tiago is a Romanesque church in the heart of Coimbra, on Praça do Comércio in the parish of São Bartolomeu. It is among the city's most important medieval buildings and is classified as a National Monument of Portugal. Set in the lower town beside the shopping streets of the Baixa, it fits easily into a walk through the old centre.
What is the history of São Tiago church?
A first church stood here before the year 957, documented in a donation to the monastery of Lorvão. The Romanesque building seen today dates from the last decades of the 12th century, under King Sancho I, and was consecrated in 1206. That makes it one of the Coimbra monuments that recall the early years of the young Portuguese kingdom.
What can you see outside?
The most distinctive feature is the south portal, probably from the late 12th century. It is formed by several unpainted archivolts framed by a vine-shaped border. Capitals and columns carry plant and animal motifs, some of them echoing carvings in the Old Cathedral (Sé Velha) of Coimbra, while the columns also bear spiral geometric reliefs. It rewards a close look, since the stone carving shows the skill of the period's masons better than anything else here.
What is the interior like?
Inside there are three naves and, at the head of the church, three chapels. The layout is plain and austere, typical of Romanesque architecture, relying on the mass of the stonework rather than rich decoration.
How did the church change over time?
In the 15th century a square chapel with a Gothic portal and a decorated frame was added on the north side. The most radical intervention came in the 1540s, when a second church was built on top of the original to serve as the city's Misericórdia (Mercy) church. That upper structure was removed during restoration work in the first half of the 20th century, which brought back the original Romanesque volume.
