Gorg d'abiss

Gorg d'Abiss in Tiarno di Sopra is one of the most unusual waterfalls in Italy's Trentino region — concealed inside a rocky chamber, invisible from a distance, and known mainly to those who follow the narrow trail along the Rio Massangla river all the way to its source.

What makes this waterfall special?

The name Gorg d'Abiss translates from the local dialect as "vortex of the abyss" — an accurate description. The main drop, roughly 10 metres high, surges from deep inside a cave-like alcove, hidden from view until the very last moment. Alongside it, a gentler stream flows over the rim of the same rocky chamber, and the two cascades nearly merge at the base, creating a double-waterfall effect that is rarely seen elsewhere. Visitors can approach close enough to feel the cold spray on their skin.

How do you get there?

The walk starts in the centre of Tiarno di Sotto, where parking is available without difficulty. From the main square, the path leads upward past the Bugatti Mill — a historic water mill dating from the 15th and 16th centuries — and then follows the bubbling Rio Massangla into the forest. The cobblestone path gradually gives way to a moss-covered trail before arriving at the rocky chamber of the waterfall. The one-way walk takes about 30 minutes, covers 1.5 km, and gains 121 metres in elevation — manageable for most visitors.

Just beyond the waterfall, a short distance further along the trail, stand the remains of the Roman bridge at Croina — evidence of an ancient route through the valley. Nearby, the church of San Giorgio was built as a votive offering by the early settlers of Tiarno, and its surroundings offer a broad view across the Ledro valley. The village of Tiarno di Sotto itself has historical interest: during the height of Venetian power, it was known for its grand mansions, some of which survive today. Close by lies Lago di Ledro, a peaceful mountain lake and a starting point for further hiking.
