Gickelsberg

Gickelsberg (Czech: Výhledy, Polish: Guślarz) is a modest granite peak in the Jizera Mountains, rising to 569 metres above sea level right on the Czech-Polish border, roughly 5 km north of Chrastava. The hill sits in the Albrechtická vrchovina micro-region, half a kilometre northwest of Horní Vítkov, a part of Chrastava, and has long served as a local vantage point for the border region.

How do you get to Gickelsberg?

Chrastava is the natural starting point, with a trail running through Horní Vítkov toward the border. It's an easy outing on a low, partly wooded hill, suitable for both hikers and cyclists looking for a short trip near Liberec. Chrastava itself lies about 9 km northwest of Liberec, so the area is easy to reach from the region's main city.

The slopes of Gickelsberg are covered in mixed woodland — remnants of old beech stands mix with spruce and larch. Worth knowing: the full panorama enjoyed here in the 19th and first half of the 20th century required either cutting trees or building a lookout tower taller than 10 metres — today, growth partially blocks some of the sightlines that were once open.

The hill's history

A staffed mountain hut was built near the summit, close to the border itself, in the 1850s. It didn't last long: in 1866, during the Austro-Prussian War (the so-called German War), it was destroyed by Prussian troops. No trace of the old building remains today, and the hill now serves mainly as a destination for short scenic walks.

When should you visit?

Spring and autumn give the clearest views, when the air is crisp and the beech canopy is either not yet full or already thinned out — that's when the panorama toward Lusatia and the Jizera foothills opens up best. Summer brings welcome shade on the approach, and winter turns the route into a quiet snowy walk, though the views themselves can be limited by the mist that's common in this part of the Jizera Mountains.
