Dlouhá hora

Chrastava, Czechia

About this place

Dlouhá hora is a 748-metre peak and nature reserve in the Liberec District of the Czech Republic, situated within the cadastral territory of Andělská Hora u Chrastavy, part of the Chrastava municipality. Its German name, Langeberg, hints at the ridge's elongated shape. The area falls within the boundaries of the Ještěd Nature Park and is administered by the Regional Authority of the Liberec Region.

Where exactly is Dlouhá hora located?

The peak lies near the village of Bílý Kostel nad Nisou in the northern part of the Liberec Region, close to the town of Chrastava. Its coordinates place it at roughly 50.79°N, 14.92°E, within the range of hills surrounding Ještěd, one of the region's most recognizable landmarks.

Why was this site protected?

The nature reserve was first established by a decree of the Ministry of Culture of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic (No. 18123/72) on 29 December 1972, and later re-designated by an order of the Liberec District Office (No. 3/97) on 18 June 1997. The protection aims to preserve natural forest communities — acidophilic and mesotrophic beech forests together with moist ravine forests — along with their rich understory flora and significant invertebrate and other fauna.

What kind of vegetation covers the mountain?

The slopes support a varied forest mosaic: stands of spruce, complexes of beech forest, and scree-slope ravine forests featuring maple and elm. This diversity of habitats makes the reserve botanically valuable. Among its notable finds is a population of shining chervil (Anthriscus nitida), considered a significant botanical record for the area. Equally noteworthy is a population of spruce showing unusually vigorous growth, likely originating from the original, natural habitat — a rare feature in a landscape long shaped by forestry.

What else is worth knowing about the surrounding area?

Dlouhá hora sits at the heart of the Ještěd Nature Park, a protected landscape area stretching from Liberec toward Chrastava. Proximity to the famous Ještěd peak, with its distinctive television tower, makes this part of the Liberec Region a popular destination for hikers and cyclists. The Dlouhá hora reserve itself, however, remains an area of limited human intervention, managed with a focus on preserving natural forest processes rather than recreation.
