Edifício da Câmara Municipal de Castelo Branco (antigo Solar dos Viscondes de Oleiros)

Castelo Branco, Portugal

About this place

Edifício da Câmara Municipal de Castelo Branco, formerly the Solar dos Viscondes de Oleiros, is a Baroque manor house in the centre of Castelo Branco, Portugal, that has served as the town hall since 1935. It has been classified as a monument of municipal interest since 1978 and ranks among the most significant civic landmarks in the city.

What is this building?

It is a former noble residence that took on a new role in the twentieth century as the seat of local government. Today it houses the Câmara Municipal, the municipal council of Castelo Branco. For a visitor it is both a working administrative building and a heritage site that can be admired from the outside during a walk through town.

Who built it and who lived here?

The house was raised in the early sixteenth century as the noble home of Bartolomeu da Fonseca. It was later inherited by José de Mesquita Martins de Fonseca, who rebuilt it in the seventeenth century. Over the following generations it was home to descendants of the Mesquita and Albuquerque families, the lineages from which the Viscounts of Oleiros came. That connection explains the traditional name, Solar dos Viscondes de Oleiros.

What does it look like?

The manor is Baroque in character, with a U-shaped plan and two floors. Its façades are regular and symmetrical. On the main front, the lower register is finished in exposed, rusticated ashlar stone, while the upper register is plastered. The main portal is crowned by an irregular curved pediment, and a central staircase with two converging flights leads up to it.

The azulejo decoration also deserves a look. On the south-facing veranda are two tile panels dated to around 1795, showing landscapes with water elements. They are a good example of the Portuguese tradition of decorating houses with glazed tiles.

How did a manor become a town hall?

The municipal council bought the building from Dr Francisco Rebelo de Albuquerque by a deed dated 18 October 1935. After some adaptation works, the council moved its headquarters there from Largo da Sé. The first session in the new home took place on 5 December 1935.

Tips for visiting

  • The building is an active public office, so access to the interior follows the institution's own rules. You can view the façade and portal freely from outside.
  • Its central location makes it easy to combine with other stops on a walking tour of Castelo Branco.
  • Look for the rusticated ground floor, the portal with its curved pediment and the double-flight staircase.
