Castle of Castelo Novo

Fundão, Portugal

About this place

Castle of Castelo Novo (Castelo de Castelo Novo) is a medieval fortress in the village of Castelo Novo, in the municipality of Fundão, Castelo Branco District, central Portugal. It stands at roughly 40.078° N, 7.496° W, on a hill exposed to the rocks of the Serra da Gardunha range.

How is the castle tied to the birth of Portugal?

The site dates to the first years of Portuguese independence. In 1208, under King Sancho I, the nobleman Pedro Guterres left these lands in his will to the Knights Templar. The castle is thought to have been under construction around that time, guarding a frontier area known as the raia beirã.

What did King Dinis change?

A few decades later, King Dinis ordered the fortifications to be renewed. That rebuilding gave the castle the Gothic character still recognisable today. The settlement grew around the walls: narrow lanes wind around the slope and climb to the keep.

What is left of the castle?

What survives above all is a square tower, whose military architecture still shows the building's original purpose. Do not expect long stretches of wall or furnished interiors. The pattern of houses around the tower, however, conveys the logic of a medieval fortified village well.

What did the archaeology reveal?

Between 2002 and 2004, three excavation campaigns took place at the castle as part of the Historic Villages of Portugal programme. Archaeologists found hundreds of traces of medieval occupation, spanning the period from construction in the 12th century to abandonment in the 17th century.

How does it fit into the Historic Villages of Portugal?

Castelo Novo is one of the 12 Historic Villages of Portugal (Aldeias Históricas de Portugal). The Portuguese government created the programme in 1991 to restore and promote a group of villages in the Beira Interior region, some of them older than the country itself. The castle is therefore one part of a larger whole and is best seen together with the rest of the village.

Planning a visit

  • Combine the castle with a walk through the village lanes that climb the slope toward the tower.
  • Wear comfortable shoes, since the buildings stand on a hillside and paving can be uneven.
  • The castle pairs well with visits to other Historic Villages in Beira Interior.
  • The hill's elevated position gives a clear view toward the neighbouring Serra da Gardunha.
