About this place
Castelo de Montalvão is a medieval castle in the village of Montalvão, in the municipality of Nisa, Portalegre District, in Portugal's Alto Alentejo. Today its ruins and surviving fortifications recall a time when Montalvão was an important frontier settlement.
Where is Castelo de Montalvão?
The castle stands in the village of Montalvão, one of the civil parishes of Nisa municipality. Its coordinates are roughly 39.596 N, 7.526 W. Alto Alentejo lies in eastern Portugal, along the border with Spain, which explains the military character of the fortresses in the area.
What is the history of the castle?
Nothing is certain about the earliest origins of the structure. It is known, however, that an older structure already stood on the site when Christian forces conquered the region during the Reconquista. The castle was then rebuilt in the 13th or early 14th century. In the first years of the Portuguese monarchy, Montalvão counted among the significant settlements of the Alto Alentejo.
The castle served a defensive purpose on the frontier with the Kingdom of Castile. Its hilltop position gave the garrison wide views over the surrounding landscape, a real advantage in medieval warfare.
What should you know about its architecture and owners?
The main gate dates from the 17th century, so the site was modified in the early modern period as well. Long before that, the castle was donated to the Military Order of Christ, one of Portugal's most important knightly orders, which held many fortresses across the country.
In 1834 the independent municipality of Montalvão was abolished. Since then the village has belonged to Nisa municipality, and the castle lost its former administrative role.
Is the castle protected?
Yes. On 1 June 2012 the fortification was included in its own Special Protection Zone and classified as a Monumento de Interesse Público (Monument of Public Interest), a heritage designation used in Portugal.
Who is it for?
Castelo de Montalvão suits travellers interested in the Reconquista, military orders and Portugal's border castles. It is a quieter stop than the region's bigger attractions, so it fits a trip through the lesser-visited Alentejo. Combine it with a walk through the village of Montalvão and a visit to the town of Nisa, which has its own separate castle and town walls.
