About this place

Castle of Amieira do Tejo

The Castle of Amieira do Tejo (Castelo de Amieira do Tejo) is a medieval fortress in the municipality of Nisa, Portalegre District, in Portugal's Alentejo region. It lies roughly 200 kilometres from Lisbon and is officially classified as a National Monument of Portugal.

Where is the Castle of Amieira do Tejo?

The castle stands in the village of Amieira do Tejo, part of the municipality of Nisa. Its coordinates are about 39.508° N, 7.816° W. The drive from Lisbon is around 200 kilometres, which makes it a natural stop on a trip into the Alentejo interior.

Who built the castle, and when?

The fortress is tied to the military religious orders that held lands in this part of Portugal during the Middle Ages. In 1199 King Sancho I granted the estate of Herdade da Açafa to the Order of the Temple, its northern edge marked by the Tagus River. In 1232 a royal donation from Sancho II extended the Hospitaller domain considerably southwards, bringing in Amieira do Tejo, Gavião and Crato.

Amieira was the last of the Hospitaller fortresses in the area to be fortified, about a century after those grants, under King Afonso IV (1325–1357). Construction is credited to the prior Álvaro Gonçalves Pereira, the illegitimate son of Gonçalo Pereira, Prior of the Hospitallers in Portugal and later a bishop. Álvaro was also the father of the future Constable Nuno Álvares Pereira, one of the most important figures in Portuguese history.

How long did construction take?

Work was still unfinished in 1359, as shown by a royal letter sent to Prior Álvaro that year. It was completed in 1362.

Is the castle a protected monument?

Yes. The Castle of Amieira do Tejo holds National Monument status (Monumento Nacional), granted by a decree of 1922. It appears among the classified heritage listed by the municipality of Nisa and is documented by Portuguese heritage and culture bodies.

Why does this place matter?

The castle shows how medieval military orders shaped the landscape and defences of the region. Its link to the Pereira family, from which the famous Constable descended, adds historical weight. For anyone interested in the Templars and Hospitallers in the Alentejo, it is a site worth comparing with other fortifications in Nisa municipality and the surrounding area.
