Couvent des Franciscains

The Couvent des Franciscains is a former convent of Third Order Franciscan sisters whose surviving traces can still be seen on rue du Buron in Azé, a former commune that merged into Château-Gontier-sur-Mayenne in 2019. Little remains of the original monastic buildings, but a chapel and a striking historic door still mark the site where the sisters lived and worked for more than two centuries.

Who founded the convent, and why did it come to Château-Gontier?

The community of Third Order Franciscan sisters arrived in Château-Gontier from Mortagne, led by Sister Isabeau Viseuse. They took over the running of the local hospital and the Maison-Dieu, a charitable shelter for the poor and sick that had previously been managed by the community of Saint-Julien. Caring for the town's most vulnerable residents was the sisters' central mission, in keeping with the long tradition of Third Order Franciscan communities across French towns of the period.

Why did the sisters relocate to Buron?

The Wars of Religion, which convulsed France in the second half of the sixteenth century, reached Château-Gontier as well. On 3 May 1593, the sisters were forced to permanently evacuate their original home. The community resettled at Buron, a small locality now part of Azé, where they continued to care for the sick until at least 1613. It was here, at Buron, that the convent whose remains survive today took shape.

What is left of the convent today?

The monastic buildings at Buron stood from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century, but were destroyed during the French Revolution. Only three elements have survived: the chapel itself, a seventeenth-century altarpiece carved from tuffeau stone and marble, and a monumental door dating from the sixteenth century. That door, belonging to the former chapel, was listed as a historic monument by decree on 9 January 1926. The site's address is 17 rue du Buron, in Azé (postal code 53200).
