About this place
Convento de Rilhafoles is a former convent in Lisbon that changed purpose several times over three centuries. It was a religious house, then a military school, and finally Portugal's first psychiatric hospital, later known as Hospital Miguel Bombarda. It is a significant witness to the city's history, though it is not a typical guidebook sight.
How did a convent come to stand in Rilhafoles?
The story starts in 1717. The Congregation of the Mission, founded by Saint Vincent de Paul, received papal authorisation and the approval of Lisbon's Cardinal-Patriarch Tomás de Almeida to establish a house in the capital. The community acquired the Quinta de Rilhafoles estate in 1720, and the main building went up roughly between 1730 and 1750.
How did it become a military school?
After religious orders were suppressed in Portugal, the state took over the former convent. From 1 September 1835 it housed the Real Colégio Militar, the Royal Military College. A decree of 14 November 1848 moved the college to the convent at Mafra, leaving the building free for a new role.
Why does it matter in the history of medicine?
In 1848 the building became the Hospital dos Alienados de Rilhafoles, regarded as the oldest psychiatric hospital in the country. In 1853 a therapeutic bathing building opened, inaugurated by Queen Maria II and considered among the best in Europe. In 1896 the circular Security Pavilion was inaugurated, designed on the panopticon idea of Jeremy Bentham. It held patients judged dangerous, as well as those sent from prisons.
Who was Miguel Bombarda?
The hospital was named after a doctor who worked in it and directed it. Miguel Bombarda was killed in 1910 inside the institution by one of his patients. The site remained a psychiatric hospital until 2011.
Can you visit?
The complex was closed to the public for years, and parts of it are being given new uses. Access rules change, so check current information before you go. The grounds and surrounding streets give a sense of the scale of the original site.
