About this place
Palácio Valmor (also called Palacete Valmor) is a historic small palace in Lisbon, built in 1906 to a design by architect Miguel Ventura Terra. It stands in the Arroios area of the Avenidas Novas, on the corner of Avenida da República and Avenida Visconde de Valmor. In 1906 it won the Prémio Valmor, one of Lisbon's most respected architecture awards.
Who built Palácio Valmor, and when?
The building belonged to Josefina Clarisse Duprat de Oliveira, the 2nd Viscondessa de Valmor. Design work ran from 1905 to 1906 under Miguel Ventura Terra, a leading Portuguese architect of the turn of the twentieth century. The team included the builder Joaquim Francisco Tojal, the stonemason Pedro Pardal Monteiro, the sculptor Jorge Pereira and the metalworker Jacob Lopes da Silva. Construction was completed in 1906.
What makes the architecture distinctive?
The plan is irregular, with a basement and two floors arranged as three volumes: a central one and two symmetrical side wings. The façade is set obliquely to the two streets it meets, so the house sits naturally on the corner. A taller central section with a neo-Romanesque arch and a broken pediment marks the axis of symmetry.
The design blends neo-Romantic, Neoclassical and Art Nouveau elements. Portuguese heritage records place it within Eclecticism and Art Nouveau, styles that were often mixed in Lisbon at the time.
What is the Prémio Valmor?
The Valmor Prize is awarded in Lisbon for outstanding architecture. It takes its name from the Valmor viscounts, and the palace carries that name twice over, since the adjoining street is also named after them. It is an easy detail to remember when walking the neighbourhood.
Protection and condition
Since 1977 the palace has held the status of Imóvel de Interesse Público, a property of public interest. Heritage registers list it under DGPC code 74181 and SIPA code 3041, and its condition is rated good.
How is the building used today?
It began as a private residence. Sources differ on its later use: some mention a business club with a restaurant from 1983, others a hotel function. Check current access arrangements before you go, as parts of the building may not be open to visitors.
