Oliveira Martins memorial

Lizbona, Portugal

About this place

The Oliveira Martins monument in Lisbon honours one of Portugal's leading nineteenth-century historians. It stands on Avenida da Liberdade, the city's grand central boulevard, just past the crossing with Rua Alexandre Herculano, at roughly 38.7233 N, 9.1480 W.

Who was Oliveira Martins?

Joaquim Pedro de Oliveira Martins (1845-1894) was born in Lisbon and worked as a historian, writer, politician, social critic and anthropologist. He is remembered for trying to explain Portuguese history through wider social forces rather than only through kings and battles. His books remain a reference point for anyone curious about how Portugal sees itself.

What will you see?

The statue belongs to a group of sculptures dedicated to Portuguese writers, placed on both sides of the avenue around the Rua Alexandre Herculano junction. Lisbon guides describe four modernist figures commissioned by the city council and inaugurated in 1950. The Oliveira Martins figure is the work of Leopoldo de Almeida (1898-1975), a sculptor also known for royal statues around the capital. Nearby you will find the monument to Alexandre Herculano, another great historian, by Salvador Barata Feyo.

This is not a stop that justifies a trip of its own. Treat it as one point on a walk along the avenue, where several sculptures can be seen on a single route.

How do you get there?

Avenida da Liberdade links Restauradores Square with Marquês de Pombal Square. The monument sits in the upper part, not far from Marquês de Pombal. Walk up from the Baixa district, or take the metro to Avenida or Marquês de Pombal station. It is free to see, as the sculpture stands in a public space.

When should you go?

The monument can be viewed at any hour. Daylight is best for photos, and the stroll is nicer in the morning or toward evening, when the heat eases and pavements are quieter. Winter days can be grey and damp, but that does not get in the way of looking at the sculptures.

What else is nearby?

The avenue is known for its plane trees, fountains, cafes and luxury shops. At its upper end rises the large monument to the Marquis of Pombal, and behind it lies Eduardo VII Park with views toward the Tagus. To see more sculptures, follow the avenue and check the figures across the junction.
