About this place
Church of Saint George in Moravičany
The Church of Saint George is a Gothic church in the village of Moravičany in Moravia, in the Šumperk District of the Olomouc Region. It stands on the bank of the Třebůvka river, about 50 meters from the local railway station, while Moravičany itself lies roughly 4 km southeast of Mohelnice. The building is the village's main landmark and one of the notable architectural features of the northern Haná region.
What is the history behind the church?
The site the church occupies today has a much longer history than the current Gothic structure. As early as the 10th–11th century, a wooden church stood here as part of a fortified Slavic settlement. Donation documents show that by the 14th century a stone church and rectory already existed on the site. The present Gothic building, comprising a sanctuary, nave, and tower, dates from the late 15th century.
Another significant chapter unfolded in 1753, when the church underwent a Baroque reconstruction. During this work, the Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk and a sacristy were added, new windows were opened, and the facades were repaired. Today the church serves as the parish church of the Roman Catholic Parish of Moravičany.
What does the church look like today?
The church has a longitudinal, single-nave layout with a sanctuary offset from the main axis. An oval sacristy, a legacy of the 18th-century Baroque additions, is attached to the northern wall. The main entrance is framed by an arched portal with a semicircular arch, topped by a triangular pediment bearing a relief of the Madonna with Child — one of the most distinctive architectural details of the entire complex.
The church does not stand alone: the wider complex includes a rectory, chapels, a surrounding wall with an entrance gate, and a former parish school, together forming a compact historic religious ensemble at the heart of the village.
Is the church a protected monument?
Yes. The entire church complex — the church itself, the rectory, the chapels, the wall with its gate, and the parish school — was listed as a cultural monument in 1964. In 2017, the mortuary building within the grounds was also declared a protected cultural monument, confirming that the whole site around the church is treated as a single historical asset rather than the church building alone.
