About this place
The Church of Pentecost in Vinkovci (Crkva silaska Duha Svetoga in Croatian) is a Serbian Orthodox church in the centre of this Slavonian town in eastern Croatia. Despite the name, it has nothing to do with the Ghanaian Pentecostal denomination of the same name. It is a parish church of the Eparchy of Osijek Polje and Baranja, seated in Osijek.
What is this church?
The dedication refers to the feast of Pentecost, the descent of the Holy Spirit, one of the most important moments in the Christian calendar. The eparchy has two churches with this dedication, and the one in Vinkovci is among them. For travellers interested in sacred architecture and the layered history of Slavonia, it is a quiet and meaningful stop.
What is its history?
The first church on this site dates to 1793 and served the local Orthodox community for almost two centuries. It was destroyed by fighting in 1991, during the Croatian War of Independence, which hit Vinkovci and its surroundings particularly hard.
Rebuilding took years. A new church was raised on the same spot between 2007 and 2012 as an exact replica of the destroyed building. Press reports mention a foundation-stone ceremony in which Bishop Lukijan of Osijek Polje and Baranja blessed the site and laid stones, as well as visits by officials who checked on the progress of the works. State funds from the Croatian budget supported the reconstruction.
Who is connected with it?
According to Wikipedia, Josif Runjanin was baptised here in 1821. He was the composer who wrote the melody of the Croatian national anthem, "Lijepa naša domovino". The painter Sava Šumanović, one of the most important Serbian and Yugoslav artists of the twentieth century, was also baptised in this church. For anyone following the cultural history of the region, these links add real interest to the visit.
How to visit
This is a working church, so respect for services is expected: modest dress, a quiet voice, and a request for permission before taking photos inside. Opening hours depend on the parish and the liturgical calendar. Visiting around a major Orthodox holiday is a good way to see parish life at its fullest. The church lies at roughly 45.2882 N, 18.8069 E, within the built-up part of town.

Why stop here?
The church shows how post-war reconstruction connects with the older story of the town. Vinkovci is known for its long settlement history, and this building adds a chapter about the Orthodox community, its loss in the 1990s and its return to the original site. For visitors exploring Slavonia, it is a calm stop that pairs well with a walk through the town centre.
