About this place
The Church of St. Demetrius in Dalj is an Orthodox cathedral in the village of Dalj, in Erdut municipality in eastern Croatia. It belongs to the Serbian Orthodox Church and serves as the seat of the Eparchy of Osijek Plain and Baranya. It is described as the largest Serbian Orthodox church in Croatia and is a protected cultural and historical monument.
Where is the Church of St. Demetrius?
Dalj lies in Slavonia, in Erdut municipality, close to the Danube and the border with Serbia. The coordinates are roughly 45.467° N, 18.867° E. The cathedral stands in the village itself and is its most important religious building. As a cathedral it matters to the whole eparchy, not only to the local parish.
How was the church built?
The first church on the site was wooden, built in 1715. The following year it was consecrated by Metropolitan Vikentije Popović Hadžilović of Karlovci. Work on a masonry church began in 1756, and the current building was completed in 1799. It blends Baroque and Classicist features, typical of church architecture in the region in the later 18th century. Inside, the iconostasis dates from 1824.
Why does it matter?
Dalj is the seat of the Eparchy of Osijek Plain and Baranya, so the cathedral is the spiritual centre for Orthodox believers in this part of Croatia. Its size and standing among Serbian Orthodox churches in the country make it one of the best-known Orthodox landmarks in Slavonia.
Restoration
The building has gone through several restorations, especially after damage suffered in both world wars. The renovated cathedral was consecrated again on 19 October 2024 by Serbian Patriarch Porfirije, an important occasion for the region's Orthodox community.
