Church of Our Lady of Prizidnice

Slatine, Croatia

About this place

The Church of Our Lady of Prizidnica (Croatian: Crkva Gospe od Prizidnice) is a small pilgrimage church on the island of Čiovo in Croatia, close to the village of Slatine. It stands away from the busy resort areas, among cliffs on the island's southern side, and suits travellers who come for quiet, scenery and the atmosphere of a former hermitage.

Where is the Church of Our Lady of Prizidnica?

The church is on Čiovo, an island near Split and Trogir, at roughly 43.484 N, 16.367 E. It lies about 2 km from Slatine. The surrounding area, known as the Prizidnice hermitage, sits in the hard-to-reach southern part of the island, among steep rock.

How do you get there?

There are two ways to approach: by boat from the sea, or along a road leading from Slatine. The site is also a stop on a popular cycling and hiking route from Slatine. Route descriptions give about 12 km in length and 45 minutes to an hour and a quarter by bike. It makes a good outing if you want to see a less visited side of the island.

What is the history of the church?

Sources do not fully agree on its beginnings. One account says a priest named Juraj Stoidražić came to this wilderness and built the church in 1546, dedicating it to the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary. Other accounts say the complex was founded in the 16th century by Glagolitic priests from Poljica. One travel listing calls it a 15th-century monument, which conflicts with the 1546 date and should be treated with caution. What is clear is that the place has long been tied to hermit life: the complex includes facilities for hermits.

What is inside?

The church keeps a painting of Our Lady with Child, linked to the Cretan school of the 14th century. For fans of sacred art and old icons, this is the main point of interest. The building itself is modest, and its appeal comes from its setting and history rather than its size.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, if you like calm, less touristy places. It combines well with a day exploring Čiovo, especially if you are staying near Trogir or Split. Bring water and a hat: do not expect much infrastructure nearby, and on hot days the route can be demanding.
