Chengen Falls

Cascata del Cenghen is a waterfall tucked into the Grigne Mountains on the Lecco shore of Lake Como, Lombardy. It drops through a narrow crack in the rock face, forming a cool, shaded retreat enclosed by dense chestnut forest — one of the most refreshing spots to visit on a hot summer day in this part of northern Italy.

The water rushes into a tight gorge between vertical rock walls, giving the falls a dramatic, almost hidden character. The surrounding forest keeps temperatures noticeably lower than the lakeshore even in midsummer. Along the trail, old mule tracks wind through chestnut woodland, and several clearings open up to sweeping views across Lake Como and the surrounding peaks.

How to get to Cascata del Cenghen?

The most popular starting point is Mandello del Lario, a town on Lake Como in the province of Lecco. It is reachable by train from Milan or Lecco in roughly 40–50 minutes. From the station or a town car park, the trail covers about 7 km (4.5 miles) round trip with an elevation gain of around 400 m. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours each way, or 2.5 to 3 hours for the full outing.

The route is rated moderate. Rocks close to the waterfall are permanently wet and slippery, so shoes with solid grip are essential — not optional.

When is the best time to visit?

The waterfall can be visited year-round, but spring and summer offer the best experience. Spring brings the highest water flow after snowmelt from the Grigne peaks. Summer turns the shaded gorge into a natural air conditioner when lakeshore temperatures climb. Autumn paints the chestnut forest in warm colours, adding a scenic bonus to the hike. In winter the path can be icy and requires appropriate footwear and extra caution.

Frequently asked questions

Can you swim near the waterfall? The falls drop into a narrow rocky gorge rather than a pool, so it is not a swimming spot. You can cool off in the stream at the base, but full swimming is not possible at the falls themselves.

Is the trail suitable for children? Older children used to mountain walking can manage the route. The final section near the waterfall is wet and slippery, so close supervision is needed with younger kids.

Is there an entrance fee? The trail is free to access. Car parking in Mandello del Lario may be paid during peak summer months.

Can you drive closer to the waterfall? There is no vehicle road to the waterfall. The approach is on foot only, starting from Mandello del Lario or Abbadia Lariana.
