About this place
Čedičové varhany u Hlinek (the Basalt Organs near Hlinek) is a protected geological nature reserve in the Karlovy Vary Region, within the municipality of Bochov, known for one of the most striking exposures of columnar basalt in the Czech Republic. It sits in a disused quarry on the slope of the Hůrka hill, roughly a kilometer from the village of Hlinky, along the road toward Přílezy.
How did the "basalt organs" form?
The formation dates back to a volcanic eruption around 22 million years ago, when molten basalt lava flowed from a crater at the summit of Hůrka. As the lava cooled and contracted slowly, it split into distinctive polygonal columns — regular pillars resembling organ pipes, which gave the reserve its name. For millions of years the structure lay buried beneath soil and surrounding rock, until quarrying activity eventually exposed it to view.
What does the wall of basalt columns look like?
The exposed quarry face rises up to 20 meters high and stretches roughly 60 meters in length. The regularity and density of the columns rank among the most impressive in the region — the basalt pillars stand in near-vertical alignment, creating the impression of natural architecture. This geometric precision is exactly what draws geology enthusiasts and photographers to the site.
Since when has the site been protected?
Čedičové varhany u Hlinek gained legal protection as a nature reserve in 1997. The protected status covers both the rock formation itself and the surrounding former quarry grounds, which have partly become overgrown over time, forming a mosaic of habitats valuable to local wildlife.
What wildlife can be found here?
Black storks regularly hunt in the area around the basalt organs — a species typically associated with quiet, undisturbed forest and valley corners. The presence of this elusive bird points to the good ecological condition of the reserve's surroundings.
