About this place
Hořečková louka na Pile is a small but botanically remarkable natural monument located right next to the village of Pila, within the Slavkovský les Protected Landscape Area in western Czechia. The protected area covers only around 1.5 hectares, yet it holds an outsized concentration of rare and endangered meadow plant species.
Why is this meadow protected?
Protection was established in 2004 to preserve well-maintained flower-rich meadows and pastures that support valuable plant communities typical of the wet and damp habitats found across the Slavkovský les region. The site is managed by the Slavkovský les Protected Landscape Area administration, which oversees extensive, low-impact use of the meadow — mowing at the right times and avoiding fertilization — to keep its unique vegetation intact.
What plants grow here?
The meadow's biggest botanical treasure is the critically endangered dense-flowered orchid (Gymnadenia densiflora): across the entire Slavkovský les region, this species survives at only two locations, and this meadow is one of them. Equally rare is Sturm's gentian (Gentianella obtusifolia subsp. sturmiana), whose population here represents one of just six known sites of this subspecies anywhere in Czechia.
Alongside these two flagship species, the meadow also hosts fragrant orchid (Gymnadenia conopsea), marsh gentian (Gentiana pneumonanthe), and adder's-tongue fern (Ophioglossum vulgatum) — an unassuming but very rare fern whose presence signals a well-preserved habitat. Having so many sensitive species concentrated in one small area reflects the exceptional quality and stability of this meadow ecosystem, which has endured here despite the agricultural intensification pressures seen across much of the wider region.
Where exactly is the meadow located?
Hořečková louka na Pile lies immediately next to the small settlement of Pila, in the Karlovy Vary Region, at the heart of the Slavkovský les — an area known for its mosaic of forests, peatlands, and wet meadows, and one of the more important biodiversity strongholds in western Czechia. The surrounding landscape contains similar, generally smaller, pockets of valuable natural habitats, making the area an appealing destination for botany enthusiasts and quiet nature walks.
Can visitors explore the meadow?
As a small protected natural monument, Hořečková louka na Pile has no visitor infrastructure such as lookout towers or education centers. It is a place meant primarily for observing nature respectfully: staying on any marked paths and refraining from picking plants, particularly since many of the species growing here are legally protected.
Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to visit Hořečková louka? Late summer, typically August and September, is the best time to see the meadow's characteristic gentians and orchids in full bloom.
Is the meadow fenced off or closed to visitors? The site remains accessible to visitors, but as a protected area it requires respectful movement across the vegetation and avoiding off-trail walking to prevent damage to the delicate, rare plants.
What makes this meadow so significant nationally? It is one of only a handful of places in Czechia where Sturm's gentian grows, and one of just two locations for the dense-flowered orchid within the entire Slavkovský les region — a rarity that makes the meadow an important site on the national nature conservation map.
Are there other natural attractions nearby? Yes, the wider Slavkovský les Protected Landscape Area is rich in similar meadows, peatlands, and forests, forming an extensive network of protected habitats worth exploring alongside a visit to Hořečková louka.
