Jungmannův altán

Jungmannův altán is a wooden viewing pavilion perched on a rocky summit above a bend of the Teplá river, a few kilometers south of Karlovy Vary. Standing at 535 meters above sea level right over the Březová dam, it is one of the youngest structures in the town's spa forests, having been built only at the turn of 2013 and 2014.

Where does the pavilion's name come from?

The pavilion is named after Josef Jungmann, a Czech writer, translator, lexicographer and philologist who visited Karlovy Vary on several occasions and reportedly left verses of his own in the surrounding hills. Local authorities chose to honor these visits by naming the newly built lookout point after him. The design came from architect František Vondráček, and the project was carried out by Lázeňské lesy Karlovy Vary, the city-run spa forest authority, as part of a Czech-German cross-border nature conservation initiative. The pavilion officially opened to visitors on April 29, 2014. A year later, in 2015, a small wooden bell tower was added a short distance away — locals jokingly call it the "bell tower at Jungmanka," and it has become a second, frequently photographed stop along the short trail.

From the pavilion's platform, the view opens onto the Teplá river valley at the point where its course is dammed by the Březová reservoir. The lake, ringed by forested slopes, captures the quieter side of the landscape around Karlovy Vary, away from the bustle of the spa town itself. Hikers and cyclists pick this spot as a short destination from the town center or as a stop along a longer loop through the surrounding hills.

How do you get there?

The easiest approach follows the Jungmannova cesta trail, which starts at the Sv. Linhart crossroads, roughly a kilometer from the pavilion; a parking area is available there for drivers. Visitors arriving by train get off at Březová station and face about a kilometer and a half of uphill walking from there. A third option starts in the village of Březová itself, with the route first passing the local water treatment plant and then the Na Výsluní cottage before reaching the pavilion. All three variants are moderate walks that don't require special preparation or gear.

When is the best time to visit?

The pavilion is open year-round, since it stands on unrestricted forest land with no set visiting hours. The best conditions for admiring the view over the Březová reservoir come in spring and autumn, when the air is clearer and the foliage doesn't yet — or no longer — obscure the waterline. Summer brings more families and cyclists to the trail, while winter calls for sturdy footwear because of icy patches along the path.
