Rozhledna Hard

Hard Lookout Tower stands on a gentle hill above the cemetery on Hornická Street in Sokolov, in the westernmost part of the Czech Republic. Rising just over 460 meters above sea level, the hilltop offers a clear panorama over the Sokolov Basin and the neighboring Ore Mountains (Krušné hory), even though the tower itself is a modest structure.

The tower is kept locked, and visitors need to borrow the key from the reception desk at the nearby Czech police building before climbing up.

What is the history behind it?

The first lookout tower on Hard hill was built in 1907 on the site of an earlier viewing pavilion, with construction finishing that October and an official opening following on April 15, 1908. Designed by the builder Heinze, it consisted of an 18-meter wooden superstructure with two viewing platforms set on a stone base. Over the following decades the wooden structure deteriorated in the weather and had to be taken down in the early 1930s.

In 1933 the surviving stone base was rebuilt as a memorial to the victims of the First World War, topped with a five-meter statue of Christ by the sculptor Schönecker. During the Second World War the site served as a military observation post, and the statue itself was melted down for the war effort. The hill then stood without a tower for decades, until a full reconstruction at the turn of the millennium restored its original purpose as a viewpoint.

When should you visit?

The tower can be visited all year round, but spring and autumn tend to offer the clearest views, when the air is less hazy and the tree canopy does not yet — or no longer — block the panorama. Since access requires borrowing a key from the nearby police station, it is worth timing a visit to the station's opening hours to avoid finding the tower locked with no way up.
