Castle Thor

Castle Thor

Walhorn, Belgium

About this place

Castle Thor is an imposing, white-plastered manor house in Walhorn, part of the municipality of Lontzen, within Belgium's German-speaking Community near the German border. Despite the name, it is not a fortress in the strict sense but a large rural manor, built on the site of what used to be the brewery belonging to the stronghold of Astenet.

Where did this building come from?

The story of the site goes back to the 17th century — in 1626 Reiner Reul had the original, by then near-uninhabitable castle of Astenet rebuilt. Construction of today's manor, however, only began in 1700, commissioned by Johann Heyendal, a wealthy tax collector active in the Duchy of Limburg. The distinctive gate porch was added seventeen years later, and the garden wing followed another twenty-one years after that. The name "Thor" itself comes from the German word for gateway (Torbau) — the manor took its name from the striking entrance gate erected in 1733.

Who designed the distinctive gateway?

The elegant porch is attributed to Johann Joseph Couven, the celebrated baroque architect from Aachen. It is to his probable involvement that the manor owes its stately, ornamented appearance — a white façade, decorative crenellated turrets, and stone dormer windows trimmed in blue stone that add a splash of colour to the elevation. Six bays give the façade its rhythm, in a style reflecting Louis XV taste.

What else stands on the grounds?

Next to the main building stands a chapel dedicated to Saint John, distinguished by an open bell turret and windows adorned with turned wooden colonnettes. The chapel, together with the neighbouring former farm buildings and the park by the Katharinenstift, is protected as heritage property.

Can visitors tour or stay at the castle?

Since 1947 (with some interruptions along the way) the building has operated as a small hotel, and the property itself has been listed as a protected heritage site of Belgium's German-speaking Community since 16 September 1987. Today, Castle Thor can be booked as a weekend getaway for family or friends, as a wedding venue for up to one hundred guests, or for corporate outings, team-building events, seminars, workshops, and yoga retreats.
