Castle of Yeste

Castle of Yeste (Castillo de Yeste) is a medieval fortress overlooking the town of Yeste in the province of Albacete, in Spain's Castilla-La Mancha region.

How do you get there?

The castle sits on a hilltop above the town, on Rayo street, with views over the rooftops of Yeste and the surrounding Sierra del Segura mountains. After the Christian conquest, it passed into the hands of the Order of Santiago, which turned it into the administrative and military headquarters of the Encomienda of Yeste and Taibilla — a frontier outpost facing the kingdoms of Murcia and Granada. In the second half of the 14th century, the outer defenses and the keep (torre del homenaje) were reinforced, and noble living quarters were added during the 15th and 16th centuries. Above the entrance to the keep, stone shields of the Order of Santiago and the Figueroa family are still visible today.

A visit takes you through the parade ground, the surviving stretches of the defensive walls, and the noble quarters. Inside the castle, the Medieval Interpretation Center "Tierra de Frontera" (Border Lands) unfolds across seven themed rooms: the Room of the Order of Santiago, the Room of Watchtowers, the Room of Urbanism, the Room of Weaponry, the Room of Nature and Repopulation, the Muslim Room, and an audiovisual room screening a documentary on frontier life. The castle's former dungeons now house an ethnological museum dedicated to traditional farming, livestock, beekeeping, rural architecture, and local customs of the region.
