Castle of Portel

Portel, Portugal

About this place

Castle of Portel (Castelo de Portel)

The Castle of Portel is a medieval fortress in the municipality of Portel, Évora District, in Portugal's Alentejo region. It sits at roughly 38.309° N, 7.703° W in the south of the country and has been protected as a national monument for over a century.

Who built the Castle of Portel, and when?

In 1258, King Afonso III granted the settlement of Portel to the nobleman João Peres de Aboim as a reward for his service during the conquest of the Algarve. The grant came with permission to build a castle, and the fortress is dated to 1261. Building was slow: when Denis took the throne in 1279, work was most likely still under way, and it carried on through his reign, which lasted until 1325.

What role did it play in the 1383–1385 crisis?

The castle features in the succession crisis known as the 1383–1385 Interregnum. Portel's mayor, Fernão Gonçalves de Sousa, sided with Castile. Fearing a revolt by the townspeople, he confiscated their weapons and stored them in the castle. In November 1384 a Portel cleric, John Matthew, opened the town's gates to Portuguese forces, which led to the settlement being taken and the castle surrendering. Once the conflict was over, the lands of Portel were handed back to the House of Braganza.

What did Manuel I change?

In the early sixteenth century the castle was remodelled under King Manuel I. The work was led by the royal architect Francisco de Arruda. It produced a palace for the Dukes of Braganza inside the fortress, plus a barbican dated to 1510, so the old stronghold also became a residence of standing.

Why did the castle fall into ruin?

Portel lies away from the border and from the main routes into the Alentejo, so the castle gradually lost its defensive purpose. It was increasingly abandoned and by the nineteenth century had become a ruin.

Heritage protection

By a decree published on 23 June 1910, the whole complex was classified as a National Monument, the highest level of heritage protection in Portugal.
