Castle of Malsobaco

Malsobaco Castle is a medieval stronghold in the municipality of Paracuellos de Jarama, in the Community of Madrid, today preserved only as ruins.

Where is Malsobaco Castle located?

The remains of the castle sit on a hilltop southwest of Paracuellos de Jarama, a short distance northeast of Madrid. The rise overlooks the valley of the Jarama River, a tributary of the Tagus, which explains the site's former strategic value.

When was the castle built?

Historians trace the earliest fortification here to the Caliphate of Córdoba, before the 11th century, and archaeological evidence points to construction as early as the mid-9th century. The stronghold is believed to have formed part of the so-called Middle March, a line of frontier fortresses organized under Emir Muhammad I (852–886) to shield Muslim territory from the Christian kingdoms advancing from the north.

Written references to the castle only appear from 1140, well into the Reconquista, under the reign of Alfonso VII of Castile. In 1180 the city of Toledo handed the fortress over to the Order of Santiago, a military-religious order that held it for several centuries, until the 16th century. Records show Rodrigo de Mendoza serving as its commander in 1540.

What survives today?

Little remains of the original stronghold. Visitors can still make out the ground plan of the fortress, small remnants of one of its side towers, and scattered stretches of wall around the perimeter. A cistern has also survived, a reminder of how water was stored on this dry, exposed hilltop. Despite the modest remains, the layout still conveys the scale of a former border fortress.

Given its historical value, Malsobaco Castle was declared a Site of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural) on 25 June 1985.

Paracuellos de Jarama lies close to Madrid, within a municipality well connected to the rest of the region. The ruins stand outside the town centre, on a hill reached along a footpath, so a visit works best on foot or by bike — sturdy shoes are recommended, since the ground is uneven and unpaved.

The Madrid region has hot summers and mild but cool winters, so spring or autumn are the best seasons for a walk up an exposed hillside, when temperatures are milder and views over the Jarama valley are at their clearest.
