Castelo da Pena da Rainha, também conhecido por Castelo de São Martinho da Pena
About this place
Castelo da Pena da Rainha, also known as Castelo de São Martinho da Pena, is a medieval hilltop fortification site in northern Portugal, in the municipality of Monção, parish of Abedim (Viana do Castelo district). Little of the original fortress survives, but the location, its history and the views make it a rewarding stop for anyone interested in the region's past.
Where is Pena da Rainha castle?
The ruins lie in the place called São Martinho, in the parish of Abedim, municipality of Monção, close to the Spanish border. The coordinates are roughly 41.99° N, 8.52° W. The castle sits on top of a granite massif known as the São Martinho height or Penha da Rainha. Access is difficult, but the summit offers excellent visibility over the surrounding land, which explains why the spot was chosen for defence.
What is the history of the castle?
In past centuries Penha da Rainha was an important centre. Its territory covered today's municipality of Monção as far as the Mouro river, ending at Merufe. In 1204 the Bishop of Tui, Dom Pedro I, consecrated the church of São Martinho here. In 1268 the settlement received a charter from King Afonso III. These two facts show that in the 13th century the place mattered both religiously and administratively.
What can you see today?
Mostly the site itself remains. There are small traces of the enclosure wall, and on a rocky hill the remnants of an old keep tower. Beside them stands the modest hermitage of São Martinho. This is not a restored castle with towers and halls to tour, but an archaeological and landscape site where history is read from stones and terrain.
Heritage protection
In October 2020 the castle was classified as a Site of Public Interest (Sítio de Interesse Público) for its historical and archaeological importance. The classification underlines that, despite modest remains, the site is significant evidence of the history of the Minho region.
