Brejoeira Palace

Pinheiros, Portugal

About this place

Brejoeira Palace (Palácio da Brejoeira) is a neoclassical residence in the parish of Pinheiros, in the municipality of Monção, northern Portugal (Viana do Castelo District). It sits about six kilometres south of Monção town, in the heart of the region famous for Alvarinho white wine. It has been classified as a National Monument since 1910.

Where is Brejoeira Palace?

The palace stands in the Minho river valley, close to the Spanish border, on a large rural estate. Descriptions of the property mention roughly 18 hectares of vineyards, eight of woodland and three of gardens. The coordinates are around 42.04 N, 8.49 W, and the drive from Monção takes only a few minutes.

Who built it, and when?

Construction began around 1806 under Luís Pereira Velho de Moscoso, a member of the local nobility. The cost was enormous for the period, estimated at 400 million réis. The French Invasions interrupted the works, and the project was carried on by his son, Simão Pereira Velho de Moscoso. The architect is not firmly established. Most often the name of Carlos Amarante is put forward, one of the leading architects working in northern Portugal, though some scholars point to José da Costa e Silva, who designed the Ajuda Palace in Lisbon.

What does the palace look like?

The building is among the finest examples of neoclassicism in the region: a symmetrical façade, calm proportions and refined finishing set against the green of the surrounding vines. Interiors and grounds were altered in the twentieth century. Early in that century the palace was bought by Counsellor Pedro Maria da Fonseca Araújo, who had it renovated with the architect Ventura Terra.

The palace and Alvarinho wine

In 1937 the estate was bought by the father of Hermínia Paes. She devoted herself to producing Alvarinho and created the Palácio da Brejoeira brand, now regarded as a benchmark in its category. As a result the palace is both an architectural monument and a working wine estate, and its image appears on the bottle labels.

Can you visit Brejoeira?

The estate has at times been open to visitors, but access rules and hours change, and press reports have voiced concern that new owners might restrict entry. Before travelling, check current information with the Monção municipality or directly with the estate's management.
