Casa Tait

Porto, Portugal

About this place

Casa Tait, formerly known as Quinta do Meio, is an 18th-century residence in the Massarelos district of Porto. Sheltered by high walls and facing the Douro River, it is a quiet corner with a historic garden, close to some of the city's better-known sights.

Where is Casa Tait?

The house stands in Massarelos, on the western side of Porto, near Quinta da Macieirinha (today the Romantic Museum) and the Crystal Palace gardens. The estate is secluded and walled, and it looks over the Douro valley and the surrounding landscape. Its coordinates are roughly 41.1478 N, 8.6286 W.

What is the history of the estate?

From the 17th century, Massarelos was on the outskirts of Porto and attracted merchants, especially foreign ones, who bought land here for country estates. Quinta do Meio belongs to that tradition. Before the Tait family, Rev. Edward Whitely ran a boys' school on the property.

The house takes its current name from William Tait (1844-1925), a port wine merchant and naturalist. He lived here from 1880 and bought the property in 1900. The Tait family kept it until 1978, when Muriel Tait died, and it then passed to Porto City Council.

What is the garden known for?

The gardens are the best-known part of Casa Tait. They include protected trees, among them a tulip tree (Liriodendron tulipifera) about 250 years old, classified as a tree of public interest. The garden was historically also admired for its woodland to the north, its collection of camellias and a rose garden laid out on the terrace above the Douro.

What is it used for today?

The building now houses the programming department (Núcleo de Programação) of Porto's museums. It works as the base of a cultural institution rather than a conventional museum with a permanent exhibition. Check the Porto museums' website for garden opening hours and entry rules before visiting.
