About this place
Palacete of the Viscounts of Balsemão in Porto
The Palacete dos Viscondes de Balsemão is a historic granite mansion on Praça de Carlos Alberto in central Porto. Built in the eighteenth century, it combines the story of a noble family home, a brief stay by an exiled king and a present-day role as a municipal cultural venue.
How did the palacete come about?
The residence was built in the middle of the 18th century by a nobleman, José Alvo Brandão. It later passed to the Balsemão family, which gave the building its name. Its style is Baroque, in the granite typical of northern Portugal.
The 19th century brought change. In the 1840s the property was rented out to be turned into an inn. In the following decade it was bought by José António de Sousa Basto, the 1st Viscount of Trindade, and his extensive remodelling gave the palacete the appearance it has today.
Why is the square named after a king of Sardinia?
The building is tied to a notable historical episode. After his defeat at the Battle of Novara in 1849, Charles Albert, King of Sardinia, abdicated and went into exile in Portugal. From 19 to 27 April 1849 he stayed here while his intended residence at Quinta da Macieirinha was being prepared. He died there on 28 July of that year. In 1852 the square was renamed Praça de Carlos Alberto in his memory.
What is inside today?
The palacete is now municipal property. It houses the Culture and Heritage Department of Porto City Council, along with the Material Base and Triplex spaces.
Material Base is a municipal project, pioneering at national level, open to the public since 2010. It aims to safeguard and document the materials that shape the look of Porto's public spaces. For anyone interested in architecture, it offers a chance to understand what the city's streets, façades and pavements are made of.
