Basilica of Santa María del Coro stands at the corner of Calle 31 de Agosto and Calle Mayor, right in the heart of Parte Vieja, San Sebastián's old town, below Mount Urgull. It ranks among the city's two basilicas and is a fixture on any walk through the historic centre.

From a Romanesque church to a Baroque basilica

The site has held a place of worship since the 12th and 13th centuries, when a Romanesque church was built here under the patronage of the kings of Navarre. Between 1522 and 1560 that earlier building was enlarged in Gothic and Renaissance style, but the structure visitors see today dates from a far more thorough rebuilding carried out between 1743 and 1774 under architects Pedro Ignacio de Lizardi and Miguel de Salazar. Part of the construction was funded by the Real Compañía Guipuzcoana de Caracas, a trading company that held a monopoly on cocoa imports from Venezuela and channelled some of its profits back into the city.

A facade framed by two towers

The building mixes several styles: Baroque dominates, with Gothic, Churrigueresque and Neoclassical touches worked into the details. The only entrance opens through a richly carved Rococo portal on the north facade, flanked by two bell towers set slightly forward of the main wall. The doorway itself is arranged between the towers like an altarpiece, topped by a statue depicting the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian, papal insignia marking the building's status as a minor basilica, and the city's coat of arms crowning the whole composition.

Inside: altarpieces, choir stalls and organ

Inside, the classical-style altarpieces — the central one and the side pieces — were made by Diego de Villanueva and Francisco Azurmendi. The main altarpiece is dedicated to the Virgen del Coro, honoured alongside Saint Sebastian as co-patron of the city. At the west end of the nave sits a semicircular wooden choir stall built by Francisco Bocente and Mendía, above which stands an organ built in 1863 by the Cavaillé-Coll workshop, one of the most respected organ builders in 19th-century Europe. Its case echoes the look of an earlier Baroque organ that previously occupied the same spot.

Minor basilica status

The church was granted the title of minor basilica on 12 February 1973, a distinction reflected in the papal symbols carved above its main entrance. The honour underlines the building's importance not just for San Sebastián but for the wider Gipuzkoa region.
