About this place
Zvolská homole is a rocky hilltop and nature reserve rising above the right bank of the Vltava River near Zvole, part of the Central Bohemia Nature Park (Střední Povltaví). The name comes from the nearby village of Zvole and from the cone-like shape of the rock towering over the river.
Where is it and what can you see from the top?
The hill lies roughly 1.5 km northwest of the center of Zvole. The rocky ridge juts high above the Vltava riverbed, and from its summit visitors get a wide panorama that stretches over the nearby town of Vrané nad Vltavou as well as the southernmost districts of Prague. That sweeping view is one of the main reasons hikers and day-trippers from the capital seek this spot out.
Why is it a protected nature reserve?
The Zvolská Homole nature reserve was declared in 1989 and covers 47 hectares. The rocky bedrock consists mainly of Paleozoic-era sediments, which have given rise to acidic soils that shape the local vegetation. Alongside oak-hornbeam forests, the reserve hosts rocky steppe grasslands, overgrown former pastures, and patches of heathland. This mosaic of habitats supports a number of rare and endangered plant species, including vetch-like comfrey relatives, the great-flowered anemone, perpetual saxifrage, and feather grass.
Was there ever a settlement on top?
Yes. Archaeological research carried out in 2004 revealed a Late Neolithic settlement on the promontory. The site was later resettled and possibly fortified during the Bronze Age. In the High Middle Ages, a castle was built on the same headland — though no written records about it have survived, leaving parts of its history still open to interpretation.
What should you know before visiting?
Zvolská Homole combines scenic views, natural history, and archaeology in a single stop along the Vltava valley, not far from Prague. Because it's a protected nature reserve, visitors should stick to marked trails to avoid damaging the habitats of rare rock-dwelling plants. The rocky, occasionally steep approach calls for sturdy footwear, but the reward at the top is a sweeping view over the river valley with Prague's skyline visible on the horizon.
