U Závisti

Praga, Czechia

About this place

U Závisti is a small but geologically remarkable nature reserve in Prague's Zbraslav district, right along Komořanská Street, next to the Závist oppidum and the Peace Labor Bridge (most Závodu míru), above the Nádraží Zbraslav bus stop. Established on 1 September 1988, it covers just 0.69 hectares at an elevation of 205–236 metres above sea level, yet its modest size hides a site of real scientific value for anyone curious about the deep geological past of the Prague area.

What can you see here?

The heart of the reserve is a rock exposure roughly 150 metres long, revealing layers of the Ordovician-age Letná Formation. The strata alternate between dark, fine-grained micaceous shales and sandstones of varying thickness, interlaced with quartz sandstones and quartzites containing pelitic-carbonate concretions that in places exceed a metre in size. On the bedding surfaces, visitors can spot trace fossils (ichnofossils) and ripple marks — imprints left by ancient water movement, frozen in stone for hundreds of millions of years.

Why is this site protected?

U Závisti is considered one of the best-preserved exposures of the Letná Formation in the wider Prague region, making it significant for lithological and micro-biostratigraphic research. The site holds a rich micropaleontological fossil record that helps scientists reconstruct environmental conditions from deep geological time. It is protected under IUCN Category III (protection code 1108) and is managed by the Prague City Hall. Because of the steep, rocky terrain, soil development across the reserve is minimal — only initial-stage ranker soils are found here, itself a notable example of limited soil succession on geologically demanding ground.

How to get there and what to know before visiting

The reserve sits directly beside the busy Komořanská Street, just above the Nádraží Zbraslav stop, making it easy to reach by public transport from central Prague. It's worth combining a visit with the neighbouring Závist oppidum — one of the most important Iron Age archaeological sites in the Czech Republic — and a walk along the Vltava riverbank toward Zbraslav Chateau. Given the steep rock exposure, visitors should stay on marked paths and exercise caution; the reserve exists primarily to protect a unique geological structure, not for climbing or rock collecting.

Frequently asked questions

What exactly does the U Závisti reserve protect? It protects a rock exposure of the Ordovician-age Letná Formation — one of the better-preserved examples in the region, valuable for geological and micropaleontological research.

How large is the protected area? The reserve covers 0.69 hectares, at an elevation of 205 to 236 metres above sea level.

When was the site granted protected status? It was designated a natural monument on 1 September 1988.

Are there other attractions nearby? Yes — it directly borders the Závist oppidum archaeological site and lies close to the historic centre of Zbraslav with its chateau.
