Castle of Alandroal
About this place
Alandroal Castle (Castelo de Alandroal) is a Gothic fortress dating from the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries, rising above the small town of Alandroal in the Alentejo region, Évora District, eastern Portugal. A National Monument since 1910, it is one of the more interesting examples of defensive architecture on the Portuguese-Spanish frontier.
When and by whom was it built?
The castle was raised under King Dinis (D. Dinis), who reigned from 1279 to 1325 and worked to strengthen the kingdom's borders. Its foundation stone was laid on 6 February 1294 by Lourenço Afonso, Master of the Order of Avis. An inscription on the western face of the keep (torre de menagem) records that construction was completed on 24 February 1298, still under the same Master. Having two dates carved in stone is unusual and shows how quickly the work progressed.
What does the fortress look like?
The castle is Gothic in character with an oval plan. Inside the walls sits a small neighbourhood, and three towers with square plans reinforce the corners. A solid keep is attached to the wall, serving as the defenders' last refuge. The whole is austere and unadorned, shaped entirely by its defensive purpose.
Who was Mouro Galvo?
The builder is the most intriguing detail. The castle was commissioned by Christian elites, but the works were led by an architect of Muslim origin who signed the building "Eu, Mouro Galvo" ("I, Mouro Galvo"). For this reason it is regarded as a fine example of Mudejar art in the Alentejo, where a Christian commission met Islamic building tradition.
What was its role on the border?
Together with the castle of Terena and the fortress of Juromenha, Alandroal Castle formed a defensive triangle along the frontier. It mattered particularly in the 17th century, during the Portuguese Restoration War.
Where is it and how to plan a visit?
The town belongs to Alandroal Municipality, and the castle stands in the heart of the old settlement. Administratively it lies in the united parishes of Alandroal (Nossa Senhora da Conceição), São Brás dos Matos (Mina do Bugalho) and Juromenha (Nossa Senhora do Loreto). Its coordinates are roughly 38.7019 N, 7.4037 W. It pairs well with a visit to nearby frontier fortifications such as Juromenha and Terena, letting you see the whole defensive system.
