Dom João IV

Vila Viçosa, Portugal

About this place

The Dom João IV monument in Vila Viçosa is an equestrian statue of King John IV of Portugal, set in the Terreiro do Paço square directly in front of the Ducal Palace (Paço Ducal). It is the work of Francisco Franco, one of the sculptors most in demand for public commissions in twentieth-century Portugal, and dates from 1943. For most visitors it is the first landmark they meet on entering the centre of this small Alentejo town.

Who was John IV, and why is he honoured here?

John IV (João IV) was the eighth Duke of Braganza, and Vila Viçosa was the seat of his family. In 1640 the Restoration War broke out, he was acclaimed king, and he reigned until his death in 1656. His accession ended the period of union with the Spanish crown and started the House of Braganza on the throne, where it stayed for centuries. After he became king, the palace in Vila Viçosa stopped being the family's only home and became one of several royal residences. The statue is a reminder that the dynasty began in this town.

What will you see?

A rider on horseback stands in the middle of the wide square, facing the palace front. The palace itself, begun in 1501 on the orders of the fourth Duke, Jaime, forms the backdrop, and the pairing makes one of the best photo compositions in town. The open square lets you view the statue from several sides. Afterwards you can visit the palace, which closed after the 1910 revolution and reopened in the 1940s through the work of the Fundação da Casa de Bragança.

How do you get there?

Vila Viçosa lies in the Évora district. Terreiro do Paço is right in the centre, so once you are in town you can walk everywhere; the palace makes the square easy to find. Reaching the town by car from Évora or Estremoz is simpler than relying on public transport.

When should you visit?

The statue stands in an open public square, so you can see it at any hour, with no ticket. Afternoon light usually suits photos of the palace front and the monument. Summers in the Alentejo can be very hot, which makes spring and autumn more comfortable for walking around.
