Wynegg Castle

Malans, Switzerland

About this place

Wynegg Castle is a ruined hill castle above the village of Malans in the Swiss canton of Graubünden. Tourism sources also list it as Klingenhorn Wynegg, and it lies in the Heidiland region.

What is Wynegg Castle?

It is the remains of a fortress built around 1200 on a hill above Malans. Today it is a ruin rather than a fully equipped visitor attraction, so it suits a short outing with a view over the surroundings and a dose of local history.

Who built it and who owned it?

The castle is linked to the Wynegg family. The first known member, Ludwig von Wynegg, appears in a record from 1254, and the family's last mention dates from 1270. Whether they served the Bishop of Chur or the Barons of Vaz is not settled by the sources.

After the family died out, the Vaz barons and the Bishop of Chur both claimed the castle. Ownership remained unclear even after the last of the Vaz line died around 1337–1338. In 1338 it was granted as a bishopric fief to the Counts of Toggenburg, and in 1436, after the last Toggenburg count died, it returned to the bishop.

From abandonment to rebuilding

According to the Historical Dictionary of Switzerland, the castle was abandoned toward the end of the 15th century and was already described as a ruin in 1548. Around 1600, Andreas von Salis had a new building erected on the site. Through marriage the estate passed to the Guler family of Davos, who expanded Wynegg and around 1624 styled themselves Guler von Wyneck. The site was finally abandoned in the late 18th century and left to decay.

What can you see today?

Little of the original 13th-century fabric survives. The Historical Dictionary of Switzerland says only a few remains of the three-storey residential block and the outer wall are original, and most of the masonry dates from the 17th century. Tourism descriptions mention a tower preserved to three storeys, with traces of plaster and beam holes still visible. The upper part is in poor condition and overgrown, so take care and avoid unstable sections.
