Baldenstein Castle

Sils im Domleschg, Switzerland

About this place

Baldenstein Castle (Schloss Baldenstein) stands in the municipality of Sils im Domleschg in the Swiss canton of Graubünden. Today it is a privately owned residence, and it is also promoted by regional tourism under the name Castle Viamala. Its story stretches across more than seven centuries, with feuds, marriages, sales and a destructive fire all leaving a mark on the building.

Who built Baldenstein and when?

The first family linked to the castle were the Knights of Baldenstein, who appear in records from 1246. The age of the tower is described differently depending on the source: one tourism page places it in the 12th century, while the Historical Lexicon of Switzerland dates the rectangular keep to the first half of the 13th century. Either way, the core of the castle belongs to the High Middle Ages, when noble families competed for control of the valleys of central Graubünden.

What happened in the Middle Ages?

A conflict between the Rhäzüns and Löwenstein families shaped the castle's early fortunes. Under the peace treaty of 1289 the castle returned to the Löwenstein family. In 1349 it passed to the Übercastel family. During the Late Middle Ages a wing for administration and living quarters was added on the west side, turning a purely defensive tower into a more comfortable seat.

Which families owned the castle later?

Around the middle of the 16th century the nobleman Jakob Ruinelli from the Valtellina acquired Baldenstein. After the last Ruinelli died in 1627, the castle passed through marriage to the Rosenroll family, who held it until that line died out in 1758. In 1782 Francesco Conrado bought the castle, and it has remained in the hands of his family ever since. Few castles in the region can point to such a long unbroken stretch of ownership by a single family.

What is the story of the fire?

In 1877 a fire destroyed large parts of the castle. The building you see today largely reflects the reconstruction carried out afterwards. A more recent change came in 1999, when a pyramid roof was added to the keep, giving the old tower its present silhouette above the Domleschg valley.

Can you visit Baldenstein Castle?

The castle is a private home and is not open to the public. Visitors can admire it from the outside and from the surrounding landscape, so plan it as a scenic stop rather than an interior tour. Check current conditions locally before travelling, because access is up to the owners.

Where is it?

Sils im Domleschg lies in the Domleschg region of Graubünden, a valley known for its dense concentration of castles and fortified houses. Baldenstein is one of several medieval sites in the area, which makes it a natural addition to a day of castle spotting by car, bike or on foot.
