Sargans Castle

Sargans, Switzerland

About this place

Sargans Castle (Schloss Sargans) is a medieval fortress in the town of Sargans, in the Swiss canton of St. Gallen. It is listed as a Swiss heritage site of national significance, and today it houses a regional museum, so a visit combines historic interiors with the story of the Rhine valley region.

What is Sargans Castle?

The castle was once the seat of a powerful noble family and later of appointed officials. It overlooks the town of Sargans in the area known as the Sarganserland. Its history is closely tied to the Counts of Werdenberg-Sargans, who held these lands from the 13th century. Sources disagree on when the first fortification was built, so it is safest to speak of medieval origins followed by later alterations.

How did the castle change hands?

The year 1483 was a turning point. Count Jörg von Werdenberg-Sargans sold the County of Sargans to the seven member places of the Swiss Confederation for 15,000 Rhenish gold guilders. From then on the castle served as the seat of the bailiffs sent by the Confederation. The last bailiff left in 1798.

The canton took possession in 1803. In 1834 the castle was auctioned to a private buyer, Johann Georg von Toggenburg. In 1899 it passed to the municipality of Sargans, which restored it between 1901 and 1906. Some sources also mention the local church community in connection with the late-19th-century transfer, so accounts of that detail vary.

What can you see inside?

The castle is home to the Museum Sarganserland, which opened in 1966 in the keep (Bergfried). Visitors can see historical rooms of the castle museum that give an insight into daily life from the Middle Ages to the present day. It suits travellers who prefer to see real interiors and objects rather than bare walls alone.

Why visit Sargans Castle?
