Westveldpark

Gandawa, Belgium

About this place

Westveldpark is a green pocket in the Westveld neighborhood of Sint-Amandsberg, a district of Ghent, Belgium. Stretching along Heiveldstraat, it's a place where a quiet walk comes wrapped in a bit of local history, since the ground beneath its paths once belonged to a private castle estate.

Why is the area called Westveld?

For centuries, the land that makes up today's Westveld was open, undeveloped countryside a few kilometres east of central Ghent. Cultivation began gradually from the medieval period onward, but the area kept its rural, semi-agricultural character well into the 19th century. That changed decisively in 1847, when the Ghent–Antwerp railway line was laid straight across Westveld from west to east, reshaping the surrounding landscape for good.

What is the park's connection to Kasteel Carelshof?

A country house known as Kasteel Carelshof once stood nearby and was renovated several times during the 19th century. It came with a landscaped estate park, the kind of formal green setting typical of gentry residences of that era. From the 1930s onward, however, the old castle park was subdivided and built over with villas. A portion of the original green space survived this development and remains public today as Westveldpark — which is why locals still describe it as a remnant of the former castle park.

What can visitors do in Westveldpark?

At the heart of the park sits a pond, ringed by a belt of trees that gives the whole area a forested feel. It's a good spot for anyone after an unhurried stroll: winding paths cut through the wooded sections, creating a sense of distance from the city even though the residential streets of Sint-Amandsberg are close by.

Families are well catered for too. Wooden play structures stand in two separate sand areas, offering children spots to climb and slide. The looping forest paths also lend themselves naturally to games of hide-and-seek or tag, since the terrain breaks up into small nooks and tree-screened stretches.

Is it easy to reach and park nearby?

Yes — the area around Westveldpark falls within a free parking zone with no time restriction, making it a convenient stop whether you're dropping by for a short walk or settling in for a longer family afternoon.
