Vuklec

Vuklec is a rocky peak rising to 572 metres above sea level, located in the Kalnik municipality (Općina Kalnik) in Koprivnica-Križevci County, northern Croatia. The summit sits in the western part of Kalnička greda, a forested mountain ridge that stretches for roughly 4.5 kilometres from the area around Kalnik Old Castle (Stari grad Kalnik) to Vratno forest. Together with the neighbouring peaks Podrevec (544 m) and Škrinja (504 m), it forms a ridgeline that ranks among the more popular hiking destinations in the Kalnik mountains.

Where exactly is Vuklec?

Vuklec lies east of the settlement of Veliki Kalnik, within the wider Kalnik mountain range, most of which spreads across Varaždin County — though the area around the peak itself falls administratively under Općina Kalnik. Near the top, the terrain turns into bare rock outcrops covered in dense vegetation, a feature typical of the whole Kalnička greda ridge.

How do you get to the summit?

Two marked trails lead to Vuklec. The first starts on the forest road running between Kalnik Old Castle and Kalnička greda: from there, follow the marked path north toward Vratno. After about ten minutes the trail turns right and, following a gentle climb, reaches a small plateau. Here the path splits — one branch descends to the village of Kalnik, while the other, to the right, continues for roughly two more minutes to the Vuklec summit itself. Counting from the mountain lodge (planinarski dom) near the Old Castle, the whole approach takes about 25 minutes on foot.

The second route begins in the village of Kalnik, next to the local church, and crosses meadows and forest before reaching the same plateau, where hikers should turn left to reach the peak.

What will you see there?

The summit rocks of Vuklec are thickly overgrown, so views from ground level are limited. It's worth climbing onto the highest rock, though — from there the view opens toward the Međimurje region. About two minutes' walk west of the peak is a viewpoint on the western side of Kalnička greda, from which you can see Kalnik Old Castle, the mountain lodge, the Vranilac peak, and — on a clear day — as far as Medvednica and Ivanščica.

When is the best time to visit?

Because the terrain is rocky and, in places, steep, dry weather is the safest bet, since the paths can get slippery when wet. Spring and autumn show off the forested ridge at its most scenic and bring temperatures well suited to longer hikes. In summer, an early start is worthwhile to avoid the midday heat on the exposed, rocky stretches of trail.
